Your first live sumo visit

Before buying equipment, check the venue and seat printed on your ticket. A seat far from the ring and a seat where you remove your shoes call for different preparations. This guide explains how to choose what you need.

Start with the venue, seat and journey home

  • Check the event date, venue and admission time on your ticket. Conditions can differ by venue and seat type, even during the same tournament.
  • Check the seating arrangement and space for bags. If you are going with others, confirm the number of tickets and where everyone will sit.
  • Plan the trip back to your hotel or train station, allowing time to leave the venue. Avoid a tight connection based on an assumed finishing time.
  • Read the organiser's current rules on photography, items brought into the venue and re-entry.

Pack lightly and start with things you already own

Prepare your ticket, wallet, phone, necessary medication and other everyday essentials first. An existing document folder can protect the bout sheet, and a bag you already own can hold purchases. Add binoculars or a power bank only if your seat and plans call for them.

Choose a sumo book by what you want to learn

For a first visit, look for illustrated explanations of the ranking system, the flow of bouts and common winning techniques. You do not need to memorise everything. Check the clarity of diagrams for techniques, or the contents of a biography or history book if you want to learn about a wrestler's career. The linked Japanese marketplace results may include Japanese-language books; check the language before buying.

Check the route and booking conditions before choosing a hotel

Look beyond a hotel's name or distance from the venue: check transfers, the walk from the station and check-in hours. Compare rates for the same dates, guest count and room conditions. Review cancellation fees, payment terms and included meals. An onsen stay may require a separate journey; plan it separately from accommodation near the venue.

Find equipment, books and stays on Rakuten

Browse categories on Rakuten and accommodation on Rakuten Travel. Check dimensions, weight and phone compatibility before buying. There is no need to purchase something new if what you already own is suitable. The linked services primarily serve the Japanese market.
